Title page and copyright page dated Book is in good condition. Some wear to covers, particularly at corners and head and foot of spine. The boards are peeking through slightly at the outside corners. Gilt stamping on front cover is bright, though spine is slightly faded. Top edge of textblock is toned. Front and back endpapers split along gutter, small inscription in black ink at top of free endpaper.

Pages are clean and unmarked. Overall, well-preserved and free of bumps or creases. Frontispiece features black and white photographic portrait of Thomas Hardy, protected by tissue guard.
